Ex-University of Waterloo student sentenced to 11 years in prison for classroom stabbings

A former University of Waterloo, Ont., student who pleaded guilty to stabbing several people in a gender-studies class in 2023 was sentenced Monday to 11 years in prison. The judge said Geovanny Villalba-Aleman’s actions constituted a “particularly grave hate crime,” while the associate professor wounded in the attack said “work to cultivate inclusive spaces of belonging continues.”
